I make forms by weaving metal wire in the same way of knitting. The cold and solid features of metal meet this warm and soft quality of knitting. To give the image of a natural object to this artifact, I make a form as a vegetable element. Moreover, to offer different characters to this work, I create it with the touches of an animal or an organic body. The plant growing straight upright changes the image and now it is installed and fixed in the air as an image of a flying or moving animal.
By constantly overlapping such heterogeneous features, I express them as a work with one body or one subject. This means not only possession of heterogeneous traits but also coexistence of completely different features. When we meet someone for the first time and realize that the person is different from us, we tend to feel discomfort and conflict. We must be aware that difference is not a question of good and evil but a chance to experience dissimilar colors. For this reason, I suggest you to withhold your judgment on the characteristics that have been considered uncomfortable.
When you identify yourself with only one identity, you will have dislike, hatred and a feeling of rejection while growing belief of which the other is bad even though the person is not evil. This feeling is undoubtedly accompanied by violence, and is a floating matter of false or vain judgment. For this reason, when you encounter a variety of features or objects, do not have fear or exclude them but try to accept all characteristics as much as you can. This will allow us to live together, respect one another and coexist in harmony.
나는 금속 와이어를 뜨개질 기법으로 엮어 형태를 만든다. 금속의 차갑고 단단한 특성이 뜨개질이라는 따뜻하고 부드러운 성질과 만나게 되는 것이다. 이렇게 만들어진 인공물에 나는 자연물의 이미지를 부여하기 위해 식물의 요소로써 형태를 만들고 또 다시 다른 성격을 부여 하고자 동물이나 유기체의 느낌으로 제작한다. 원래 직립하여 자라는 식물은 이미지가 전환되어 비행하거나 움직이고 있는 듯한 동물의 이미지로 공중에 설치되어 고정된다.
이렇게 다른 성격을 끊임없이 중첩하여 여러 가지 특성을 한 몸체나 한 주제의 작품으로 표현한다. 이것은 그저 다르기만 한 특성을 가지고 있는 것 일뿐만 아니라 완전히 반대되는 특성이 공존하게 되는 상황을 의미한다. 처음 누군가를 만날 때 그가 나와 다르면 불편함을 느끼며 갈등을 겪을 수도 있다. 우리가 여기서 반드시 알아야 될 것은, 차이(다름)는 선악의 문제가 아니라 다른 색을 만나게 되는 경험이라는 것이다. 그러니 불편함으로 느껴지던 특성들에 잠시만 판단을 보류해 보자.
하나의 정체성하고만 나를 동일시한다면, 나는 미움, 혐오, 그리고 배척하는 마음을 가지게 되며 악한 것이 아님에도 그 타자가 나쁘다는 의식을 갖게 된다. 그것은 분명 폭력을 수반한 감정이며 헛된 판단의 부유물이다. 그러므로 다양한 특성이나 대상과 만나게 될 때, 두려워하거나 배제하는 것 대신, 우리는 가능한 한 그 모든 특성들을 다 받아들일 수 있어야 한다. 그래야 함께 살아가고 존중하며 공존하는 것이 가능해진다.
